In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, qualifications are placed on levels from Entry level to Level 8:

- A qualification number, if it is described as regulated, which you can check on the official register of regulated qualifications
- The module list and assessment methods
- Written progression information: which courses or institutions accept it, on what conditions
Different providers use similar titles for different qualifications, so the title alone is not enough.
How to check progression
Whether a Level 3 diploma gets you into a degree, a higher diploma or a job depends on the receiving institution or employer:
- Universities set requirements course by course. Some accept named Level 3 diplomas; some ask for A Levels or UCAS Tariff points, and not every Level 3 qualification carries Tariff points.
- Higher-level diplomas often list Level 3 as an entry route.
- Employers look at the skills and evidence you can show as much as the certificate.
