Business assignment and progression checklist

A fictional market-research assignment of the kind practised on a Level 3 business diploma, plus a checklist for recording exactly what a university confirms before you rely on the award.

Practice material. The bakery, the questionnaire and the results are fictional and were written by LSBUK for practice. This is not an official ATHE assessment, assignment brief or marking scheme, and it does not show how any real assignment will be graded.

Part 1: a worked market-research task

Research question. Do weekday and weekend customers of a small bakery value different things?

Method. A five-question survey asked customers to rank speed of service, product range, price and atmosphere. Twelve weekday and twelve weekend customers answered during one week.

Customer group Ranked speed first Ranked range first Ranked price first Ranked atmosphere first
Weekday (12) 9 2 1 0
Weekend (12) 2 7 1 2

Analysis. In this sample, weekday customers mostly prioritised speed (9 of 12, 75%), while weekend customers more often prioritised range (7 of 12, about 58%). That suggests the bakery could test faster weekday service and a wider weekend range.

Limitations. Twenty-four responses from one shop in one week cannot represent all customers. People chose whether to answer, so busy customers may be missing. A stronger study would repeat the survey over several weeks and compare against sales data.

References. List each source you used, including course notes and any textbook, in one consistent style.

Part 2: a practice feedback rubric

Use this to review your own draft. It is an illustrative checklist, not an awarding-body marking scheme.

Criterion Developing Secure Strong
Question Broad or unclear Focused and answerable Focused, with a clear reason it matters
Evidence Little detail on who or how many Sample described Sample and method described and justified
Analysis Opinions without numbers Uses the numbers correctly Compares groups and explains what the numbers show
Limitations Not mentioned Listed Explained, with how to reduce them
References Missing or inconsistent Present Complete and consistent

Part 3: progression checklist

Before you rely on the diploma for a degree application, record what the university confirms for the exact award: its title, qualification number, the grades it requires, the English evidence it accepts and the date it confirmed in writing. A Level 3 award does not by itself guarantee a place or entry into a later year of a degree.

Field guide

FieldWhat to record
Exact awardThe full title of the qualification you are studying.
Qualification numberThe Ofqual number, for example 610/1764/4.
Unit/topicThe unit or topic the task practises.
Research questionOne focused question you can answer with the evidence available.
EvidenceWhat you collected, from whom, how many and when.
AnalysisWhat the evidence shows, with the numbers that support it.
LimitationsWhy the evidence may not represent everyone: sample size, who answered, timing.
ReferencesEvery source you used, in a consistent referencing style.
Receiving universityThe institution you intend to apply to.
Exact degreeThe course title and code from the university's own page.
