Course overview
IELTS Preparation at LSBUK is a structured, exam-focused course covering all four components of the IELTS test: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Learners develop both their English skills and their understanding of IELTS task requirements, question types and scoring criteria. The course provides regular timed practice under exam conditions to build speed, accuracy and confidence before test day.
What you will study
Develop systematic listening strategies to maximise your score on the IELTS Listening test. Examine question types including multiple choice, matching, labelling, and note completion. Learn how to predict answers, identify signposting language, and manage attention across the four sections. Practise with authentic IELTS recordings covering everyday conversations, monologues, and academic discussions, building the speed and accuracy needed for a high band score.
Master the reading techniques and time management strategies essential for IELTS Reading success. Examine skimming, scanning, and detailed reading approaches for different question types. Learn how to locate answers efficiently in long academic texts within strict time limits. Practise with IELTS-style academic passages covering a range of topics, building vocabulary, comprehension speed, and the ability to distinguish correct answers from distractors.
Develop the writing skills required for both IELTS Writing tasks. In Task 1, learn to describe graphs, charts, diagrams, and maps with accurate language and appropriate structure. In Task 2, learn to construct well-organised essays with clear arguments, supporting evidence, and a coherent conclusion. Examine band descriptors and common errors, practising timed writing with detailed feedback on task achievement, coherence, lexical resource, and grammatical range.
Prepare for all three parts of the IELTS Speaking test with targeted practice and feedback. In Part 1, develop fluent responses to familiar personal topics. In Part 2, learn to deliver an extended monologue from a cue card with structure and detail. In Part 3, build skills for abstract discussion and giving opinions on complex topics. Receive feedback on fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammatical accuracy to maximise your band score.
Build the academic and general vocabulary needed to perform at a high level across all four IELTS skills. Examine high-frequency academic vocabulary using the Academic Word List, collocations, and topic-specific lexical sets. Learn strategies for inferring meaning from context, avoiding repetition, and using precise vocabulary in writing and speaking. Develop vocabulary acquisition habits that continue strengthening your English beyond the examination.
Build examination stamina, speed, and accuracy through full timed practice tests under exam conditions. Complete mock IELTS papers with immediate analysis and scoring across all four skills. Identify your patterns of error and prioritise revision accordingly. Learn how to pace yourself through each section, manage examination anxiety, and peak on test day. Use mock test results to track improvement and set realistic band score targets.
Prepare comprehensively for the practical and psychological demands of IELTS test day. Examine registration procedures, permitted materials, timing of each section, and common administrative pitfalls. Learn strategies for managing nerves, recovering quickly from errors, and maintaining focus throughout the test. Develop a personal test day routine and contingency plan that enables you to perform consistently at your highest level.
Analyse your IELTS performance systematically to identify the specific improvements needed to reach your target band score. Examine the band descriptors for each skill in detail and understand exactly what examiners reward at each level. Learn targeted remediation strategies for common problem areas including grammar, pronunciation, coherence, and task response. Develop a structured study plan focused on the highest-impact improvements.
Develop sophisticated vocabulary range for candidates targeting band 7 and above. Examine advanced idiomatic expressions, academic collocations, and nuanced vocabulary for expressing complex ideas precisely. Learn how to use vocabulary accurately at an advanced level, avoiding false friends and register errors. Practise deploying advanced vocabulary naturally in timed writing and speaking tasks to build the lexical resource that distinguishes band 7-plus candidates.
Build the mindset, habits, and resilience needed to perform under examination pressure. Examine the psychology of test anxiety and evidence-based techniques for managing it. Develop a growth mindset towards language learning and test preparation. Learn how positive self-talk, breathing techniques, and preparation routines reduce performance anxiety. Consolidate confidence through final mock examination practice and personalised feedback before test day.
