There is no easy route into UK medical practice - but there are routes with different trade-offs. This is an orientation guide, not medical or immigration advice: the General Medical Council and gov.uk are the authoritative sources for every step below.
The routes that exist
PLAB. The standard path for international medical graduates: PLAB 1 (available at overseas test centres including India), then PLAB 2 in the UK, then GMC registration. Widely used and well documented, but PLAB 2 requires travel and the post-registration job search takes time.
Recognised postgraduate qualification. Certain postgraduate qualifications and specialist experience can be accepted for registration without PLAB. Where you qualify, this can be faster - but eligibility is narrow and defined by the GMC.
Sponsored schemes. Programmes such as international fellowship or training arrangements bring doctors in with a post attached. The advantage is that employment and immigration are handled together; the disadvantage is limited places and fixed timing.
What "easiest" really depends on
- Your stage. A recent graduate's best route is usually PLAB. A doctor with specialist postgraduate qualifications may have a shorter path.
- Your specialty. Demand varies significantly by specialty and region.
- Your finances. PLAB 2 plus travel, accommodation and a job-search period in the UK is a substantial outlay before any income.
- Your English evidence. IELTS Academic or OET at the level the GMC requires is a gate on every route.
The step people underestimate
Registration is not employment. Many doctors need a clinical attachment or non-training post before entering formal training, and that search can take months. Budget for it.
