There are more accepted routes than most applicants realise, and choosing the right one can save time and money. But remember there are two separate requirements to satisfy: the university's and the Home Office's.
The main options
Secure English Language Tests (SELT). Approved by the Home Office for visa purposes - IELTS for UKVI is the most widely used, with other approved providers available. If your route requires a SELT, only an approved test at an approved centre counts.
Standard academic English tests. IELTS Academic, PTE Academic, TOEFL and others are accepted by many universities for admission. Whether they also satisfy the visa route depends on your circumstances and the institution's status - check both.
University assessment. Some institutions can assess English themselves for degree-level courses. This is convenient but not universal.
Exemption based on prior study. Where you studied a qualification taught and assessed in English, a waiver may be available - conditions apply. See do I need IELTS if I studied in English in India.
Class 12 English marks. Some UK universities accept strong CBSE, ICSE or ISC English results in place of a test. Ask the specific university.
How to choose
- Ask the university what it accepts, in writing, for both admission and CAS purposes.
- Check gov.uk for the visa-side requirement on your route.
- Pick the test on availability and format, not price alone - a slot two months away can cost you an intake.
- Note the validity period and plan so your result is still valid at the point of application.
Preparation advice
Most candidates who fall short do so on one component - usually writing or speaking - rather than overall ability. Take a timed practice test first, identify the weak band, and target that. General English practice is slower and less effective than test-specific preparation.
