Sometimes yes, sometimes no - and the answer depends on two separate decision-makers who do not always agree: the university and the Home Office.
Two requirements, two authorities
The university's requirement. Institutions set their own English entry standards and many will waive a test where you can evidence English-medium study, often subject to conditions - the country, the qualification, how recently you studied, and sometimes your English marks in Class 12.
The visa requirement. For a Student visa, the Home Office sets its own rules on how English ability must be evidenced. In some cases the university can assess your English itself; in others an approved Secure English Language Test is required. The current rules are on gov.uk.
You need to satisfy both. A university waiver does not automatically satisfy the visa route, and vice versa.
What usually helps your case
- A degree taught and assessed entirely in English from a recognised institution.
- A letter from your institution confirming the medium of instruction and assessment - request this early; it takes time.
- Strong English marks in Class 12 from CBSE, ICSE or ISC, which some universities accept as evidence.
- Recent study - waivers often require the qualification to be within a set number of years.
What to do
- Email the specific university's admissions team. Ask plainly: "Given my qualification, do I need an English test for admission, and will that satisfy the Student visa requirement?" Get the answer in writing.
- Check gov.uk for the visa-side requirement for your route.
- If in doubt, sit the test. It is cheaper than a delayed intake, and the result is valid for a period that covers most application timelines.
A reason to sit it anyway
Some employers and professional registrations ask for a test result regardless of your degree. If your longer plan involves a regulated profession or a later work visa, an IELTS result on file can save you repeating the process.
