Most Level 3 business diplomas ask for completed Level 2 study, typically GCSEs including English and maths or an equivalent, plus enough English to study in. Some ask for specific grades; many assess each applicant individually, especially mature learners and international students. Requirements are set by each provider, so one college's criteria do not apply to every Level 3 programme.
Academic entry criteria
Common academic requirements include:
- GCSEs or equivalent, often including English and maths. Where grades are specified, grade 4 (the old grade C) is common.
- A Level 2 qualification in a related subject, as an alternative to GCSEs
- An international equivalent, such as Class 10 results in India or a secondary school certificate from another country, assessed individually
- A completed foundation programme that the provider accepts as meeting the requirement
If you do not meet a stated grade, ask whether the provider considers other evidence. Many do.
Language and supporting evidence
English. For programmes taught in English, you will need to show you can study in English. This might be a GCSE in English, English-medium schooling, a test such as IELTS, or the provider's own assessment. If you will study on campus in the UK on a Student visa, the visa has its own English rules.
Supporting evidence that can strengthen an application:
- a short personal statement about why you want to study business
- work experience, including part-time or voluntary work
- a reference from a teacher or employer
Non-standard applicant assessment
Many learners come to a Level 3 business diploma without standard qualifications: adults returning to study, people who left school early, and international applicants whose school system does not map neatly onto GCSEs. Providers often assess these applicants individually, for example through:
- an interview or conversation about your goals
- a short written task to check English and study skills
- a review of your work experience
Ask the provider how they assess applicants in your situation, and what would happen if you do not meet the standard requirements.
