An international foundation diploma is a preparatory programme for students, usually from outside the UK, who want to go on to further study in the UK but need to build academic skills, subject knowledge and English first. It typically combines study skills, academic English and introductory subject modules such as business or management, and lasts six months to a year. The name is used by many different providers for different programmes, so what matters is the specific programme: who issues it, at what level, and which institutions accept it.
What the qualification category covers
"Foundation" is used for several different things in UK education. They are not interchangeable.

A business foundation programme sits in the first row: it prepares you for business or management study but is not itself a degree.
Identify the issuer and assessment
Before you apply to any foundation programme, find out:
- Who issues the award? The college itself, a university, or an external awarding organisation. The certificate should name the issuer.
- What level is it? In England, qualifications are placed on a framework from Entry level to Level 8. Ask the provider which level applies and how that has been established.
- Is it on a public register? If the provider says a qualification is regulated, you can look it up on the official register of regulated qualifications and check the title and number match.
- How is it assessed? Written assignments, exams, presentations, portfolios. Ask for the module list and how each is marked.
- Which institutions accept it, for which courses, and on what conditions? Get this in writing.
How to verify a specific programme
A simple verification routine:
- Ask the provider for the qualification title, issuer and level in writing.
- If it is described as regulated, check the official register.
- Pick two or three degree courses you might want, read their published entry requirements, and ask their admissions teams whether they accept this exact qualification.
- Ask the foundation provider for the documents you will receive on completion, such as a certificate and transcript.
If a provider cannot answer these clearly, treat any promise of progression with caution.
Is an international foundation diploma right for you?
It may suit you if:
- your school qualifications do not meet UK degree entry requirements directly
- you want to build academic English and study skills before a degree or higher diploma
- you want an introduction to business and management first
It may not be the best route if you already meet the entry requirements for your target course, or if the institution you want has its own foundation year that it prefers.
LSBUK's International Foundation Diploma
LSBUK's international foundation programme, the International Foundation Diploma, is a ten-module business foundation programme covering academic study skills, business communication, organisations, marketing, management, research methods, digital literacy and progression planning. The award is the ATHE Level 3 International Foundation Diploma in Business, an Ofqual-regulated qualification (610/3256/6) at RQF Level 3, the same level as A Levels. It runs for six to nine months, live online or on campus in London. Completing it meets the entry requirement for our Level 3 Diploma in Business and Management.
