For students in Italy, a UK business qualification is a way to stand out in a competitive market and to keep the option of working internationally open. The Level 3 Diploma in Business and Management is a recognised, practical first step - and in 2026 there are a few new travel rules worth understanding if you plan to visit the UK.
This guide covers what the diploma is, the UK ETA rules for Italian nationals, and how to start from Milan, Rome or anywhere in Italy.
What Is the Level 3 Diploma in Business and Management?
The Level 3 Diploma is a foundational qualification on the UK Regulated Qualifications Framework, broadly equivalent in level to the final years of the Italian scuola superiore or to UK A-levels, with a clear focus on business.
It teaches the essentials that every business career is built on: how organisations work, the principles of management and leadership, marketing, basic finance, and professional communication. Because it is taught and assessed in English, it strengthens your business English alongside your subject knowledge.
Why Italian Students Choose a UK Business Qualification
UK qualifications are recognised across Europe and beyond. For learners in Italy, the Level 3 Diploma offers a few clear benefits:
- A recognised English-language credential that employers and universities understand.
- A flexible entry point - you can study online from Italy without committing to a full degree straight away.
- A ladder to higher study, including a route toward a UK degree at Level 6.
The UK ETA: What Changed for Italian Travellers
If you plan to travel to the UK - to visit a campus, attend a short course, or explore living there - you now need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).
Since 2 April 2025, all EU nationals, including Italian citizens, must hold an ETA to enter the UK as a visitor. The key facts:
- It costs around £20 and is valid for two years (or until your passport expires), allowing multiple trips.
- You apply online in advance - it is not a visa, but you must have one before you travel.
- Enforcement has been tightened, and from early 2026 travelling without a required ETA can mean being refused boarding or entry.
Important: an ETA covers visits and short courses of up to six months. If you want to come to the UK for a longer programme of study, you will normally need a Student visa instead. Rules change, so always check the current position on the official UK government site at gov.uk before booking travel.
If you study online from Italy, you do not need an ETA or a visa at all - you learn from home and only think about travel if you later choose to study in person.
What You Will Study
The Level 3 Diploma introduces the core areas of business:
- How organisations are structured and run
- Management and leadership fundamentals
- Marketing and understanding customers
- Basic finance, budgeting and business figures
- Professional and workplace communication
Assessment is coursework-based rather than exam-heavy, which works well for learners studying alongside a job.
Where the Diploma Leads
The Level 3 Diploma is the first rung on a ladder. From here you can progress to the Level 4 Extended Diploma in Business and Management, then Level 5 and Level 6 - the last of which is broadly equivalent to a bachelor's degree. Many students use this pathway to reach degree level for less than the cost of a traditional three-year course.
For careers, a Level 3 business qualification supports entry-level roles in administration, marketing, sales, operations and junior management - the roles where you gain the experience that leads to progression.
