This is the worst outcome in the whole process, and it is almost entirely preventable by sequencing. Here is what can go wrong, when, and what to do about it.
When offers actually collapse
- Before the Certificate of Sponsorship is assigned. A hiring freeze, a budget cut or a reorganisation, and the role disappears.
- During the visa process. A refusal, a document problem, or a delay long enough that the employer fills the role.
- After arrival, in probation. Rare, but if the sponsored role ends, your visa is tied to that sponsorship and the Home Office allows only a limited period to find a new sponsor.
The rule that protects you
Do not resign until your visa is granted and you have a signed contract with a start date. Not when you get the offer. Not when the Certificate of Sponsorship is assigned. When the visa decision is in your hand.
Employers understand this. A candidate who says "I'll serve notice once my visa is granted" is behaving sensibly, not distrustfully.
Reduce the exposure further
- Ask about notice periods in writing and align them with the visa timeline.
- Check whether your Indian employer offers a sabbatical or leave without pay. Some do, and it turns a cliff edge into a bridge.
- Keep a reserve covering six months of living costs in whichever country you would be in.
- Do not sell the house, break the lease or move dependants early.
If it happens anyway
- Check your visa position immediately if you are already in the UK - there are time limits and they matter.
- Tell your network at once. Most replacement roles come through people, and speed matters more than polish.
- Ask the employer for a written explanation. If the role was withdrawn through no fault of yours, that letter helps with the next employer and with any visa correspondence.
- Take advice from a qualified immigration adviser if your status is affected. This is one of the few situations where paying for regulated advice is clearly worth it.
