What's the Honest Timeline for Moving From India to the UK for Work?

A realistic month-by-month picture of how long the move from India to the UK actually takes - job search, sponsorship, visa and arrival.

Calendar and planner used to map a relocation timeline

Most disappointment about moving to the UK comes from a timeline problem, not a talent problem. People plan for three months and the process takes closer to a year. Here is the honest shape of it.

Stage 1 - Preparation (1 to 3 months)

Rewriting your CV in UK format, gathering evidence of your experience, sitting an English test if you need one, and shortlisting employers who actually sponsor. Skipping this stage is the single most common reason applications stall later.

Stage 2 - The job search (3 to 9 months, sometimes longer)

This is the long pole. You are competing with candidates already in the country who cost the employer nothing extra and can start next month. Expect a low response rate early, improving as you narrow your targeting to sponsoring employers and roles that genuinely match your record.

Stage 3 - Offer and Certificate of Sponsorship (2 to 8 weeks)

Once you have an offer, the employer assigns a Certificate of Sponsorship. How fast this happens depends entirely on how experienced that employer's HR team is with the process.

Stage 4 - Visa application and decision (weeks, variable)

Processing times are published by UK Visas and Immigration and vary by route, country and time of year, with priority services available at extra cost. Check the current guidance on gov.uk - do not budget on a number you read in a forum.

Stage 5 - Move and settle (1 to 2 months)

Flights, initial accommodation, National Insurance number, a bank account, GP registration. Most people need a financial buffer covering at least the first two to three months, because deposits and up-front rent land before your first salary does.

What that adds up to

For most people applying from India with the experience already in hand, nine to eighteen months end to end is a realistic planning assumption. Faster happens - usually when the applicant has a scarce, in-demand skill or an internal referral.

The alternative timeline

The study route front-loads the certainty. You know when the course starts, when it ends, and that a Graduate Route application follows. The job search then happens from inside the UK, where it is materially easier. It is not faster in total, but far fewer stages are outside your control - see best UK pathways from India.
