Where you study changes your total cost, your job options and your daily life at least as much as which university you choose. Here is how the main options differ.
London
The largest job market, the most international, the best transport - and by a distance the highest living costs. Rent can consume the difference between two universities' fees several times over. London works well if your target sector is concentrated there (finance, media, consulting, much of tech) and you have budgeted honestly.
Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds
Large cities with substantial professional job markets, well-established South Asian communities, good transport links and materially lower rents than London. For most business, engineering and technology students, these offer the best balance of opportunity and cost.
Glasgow, Edinburgh and other Scottish cities
Strong universities, distinct culture, and different course structures - Scottish bachelor's degrees are commonly four years. Note that Scotland has its own education system; check how it affects course length and cost.
Sheffield, Nottingham, Newcastle, Liverpool, Coventry
Lower cost of living, sizeable student populations, and often better value accommodation. Job markets are smaller but real, and many students commute or relocate after graduating.
Smaller university towns
Cheapest and often the friendliest, with the strongest campus community. The trade-off is fewer local jobs and less to do, which matters more than students expect over three years.
How to actually decide
- Where is your target sector? Follow the jobs, not the postcode.
- Run the numbers on rent, using real listings for the specific city.
- Check transport costs - a monthly travel pass in a large city is a real line item.
- Consider community. Having people around you who understand your context matters more in the first winter than you expect.
- Visit if you can, virtually if not. Campus tours and city walkthroughs are widely available online.
The honest advice
Do not choose London by default. A strong course in a lower-cost city, with the savings spent on an extra year of runway for your job search, is frequently the better decision.
