The Home Office publishes maintenance amounts it considers necessary for a Student visa application - that is a useful floor, not a realistic budget. Here is what actually makes up the monthly cost, and where it varies.
The lines that make up your month
Rent. The dominant cost, and the one that varies most. A room in a shared house in a smaller city and a studio in central London are different worlds. Check whether bills are included; "all inclusive" changes the comparison significantly.
Utilities, where not included - electricity, gas, water, internet. Budget seasonally: winter heating is a real jump.
Food. Cooking at home is dramatically cheaper than eating out. Supermarket own-brand ranges and end-of-day reductions are used by everyone, not just students.
Transport. Student travel passes exist in most cities. If you can live within walking or cycling distance of campus, this line can drop to almost nothing - which is often worth paying slightly more rent for.
Phone and internet. SIM-only plans are cheap; contracts requiring credit history are not always available on arrival.
Course costs. Books, printing, materials, field trips.
Personal and social. Do not budget zero here. Isolation is a real risk and a social life is not a luxury.
Insurance. Contents insurance, and travel insurance for trips home.

- City. London versus a regional city is the single biggest factor.
- Accommodation type. Halls with bills included versus a private studio.
- Whether you cook.
- Distance from campus.
The costs that hit before the monthly budget starts
Deposit plus advance rent, furnishing a room, initial groceries, and travel from the airport. Budget the first month at roughly double a normal one.
How to plan honestly
Build your budget from real listings and real prices for your specific city, not from national averages. Then add ten per cent. Students who run out of money in term two almost always budgeted from an average.
