Is an Online AI Course Better Than In-Person Training?

Format matters less than whether the teaching is live and whether the work is applied. How to choose between online, in-person and blended AI training.

The online-versus-in-person debate hides the variable that actually predicts outcomes: live versus recorded. A live online cohort beats a recorded in-person replay every time.

What online does well

  • Fits around a senior workload without travel days.
  • Lets you learn beside colleagues in other locations.
  • Costs less, because there is no venue or travel.
  • Sessions are often recorded, so a missed week is recoverable.

What in-person does well

  • Attention. A room is harder to half-attend than a browser tab.
  • Peer relationships, which for executive education is often the real product.
  • Hands-on workshops where facilitators can see people stuck.

The variable that matters more

Self-paced video has completion rates in the low teens for most providers. Live cohorts, online or not, finish far more often, because a scheduled session with other people creates the obligation that a video library cannot.

So the ranking is: live in-person ≈ live online > blended with recordings > pure self-paced.

Blended is usually the right answer for leaders

Live sessions for the discussion and the questions, self-paced material for the reading, applied work in between against your own organisation. That is how Leading AI Innovation & Organisational Transformation runs over six weeks, and why most working executives finish it.

Questions to ask a provider

How many hours are live? Is the cohort fixed or rolling? Can I ask questions in the session or only in a forum? Is there feedback on my work, or only a completion certificate? More in questions to ask about AI courses.

The bottom line

Do not choose on venue. Choose live teaching and applied work, then pick whichever format you will genuinely turn up to. Related: the best AI training for busy executives.
