In most UK universities, 70% and above is a first class mark - the highest classification band. If you come from a system where 90% is a normal good result, this takes real adjustment.
The standard undergraduate bands
- 70%+ - First class
- 60-69% - Upper second (2:1)
- 50-59% - Lower second (2:2)
- 40-49% - Third class
- Below 40% - Fail
Postgraduate marking usually differs: distinction, merit and pass bands, commonly around 70, 60 and 50 respectively. Your course handbook sets out the exact scheme.
Why UK marks are compressed
The scale is not a percentage of correct answers. It is a judgement against criteria, and the top of the scale is reserved for work approaching publishable quality. Marks above 80% are unusual, and above 90% rare, in essay-based subjects. Nobody is marking you harshly - the ceiling is simply used differently.
Quantitative subjects can mark higher, because answers are more clearly right or wrong. If you are taking a mix of modules, expect the numbers to look different across them.
What this means practically
- Do not panic at 62%. That is a solid 2:1 and a perfectly good result.
- The 2:1 threshold at 60% is the line that matters most for graduate schemes and master's admissions.
- Compare within the UK system only. Converting your UK mark back into an Indian percentage for a CV is misleading in both directions - state the classification instead. See what's the difference between a 2:1 UK degree and an Indian GPA.
Read the criteria, not just the number
Every UK assignment has published marking criteria describing what each band requires. The difference between 58% and 68% is usually described there in plain terms - typically more critical analysis, better use of sources, and a clearer argument. Read it before you write, and read the feedback carefully afterwards.
If your marks start low
That is common in a first term and it is recoverable. Book a tutorial, ask specifically what would move the work up a band, and use the academic skills service.
