The syllabus content is often similar. What differs is what you are expected to do with it - and that difference is where new international students lose marks in their first term.
Assessment
India: heavily weighted toward final examinations, with a strong emphasis on accurate recall of taught material.
UK: a mix of coursework, essays, projects, presentations, group work and exams, with continuous assessment across the year. A single module might have no exam at all.
What this means for you: your grade is built through the year. Falling behind in week four is expensive in a way it might not have been before.
What earns marks
India: completeness and accuracy against the syllabus.
UK: critical evaluation. Marking criteria reward analysis, argument, use of evidence, and engagement with academic literature. Reproducing the lecture, however accurately, typically earns a middling mark.
What this means for you: read the marking rubric before you write anything. UK rubrics are published and specific, and they tell you exactly where the marks are.
The classroom
India: often lecture-led, with respect shown through attentiveness.
UK: seminars expect you to speak, question the reading and disagree - including with the tutor. Silence is read as disengagement rather than respect. This adjustment is cultural, not academic, and it takes a few weeks.
Referencing and academic integrity
UK institutions treat plagiarism extremely seriously, including unintentional plagiarism from poor citation, and increasingly have policies on AI-generated work. Learn your course's referencing system before term starts. This single piece of preparation prevents the most common serious problem international students face.
Independent study
A UK course expects several hours of independent reading for every taught hour, and nobody chases you to do it. The reading list is not optional background - it is the material the assignments assess.
How to adjust fast
Use the academic skills service in week one, not after a bad grade. Ask for feedback on a draft. Form a study group. Treat the first assignment as a calibration exercise.
