Each destination trades off differently. The right answer depends on your budget, your timeline and whether settlement is the goal. Here is the comparison, with the caveat that immigration rules in all four countries change frequently - verify with each government's official source before deciding.
Course length and cost
UK: three-year bachelor's, one-year master's. High tuition, but the shortest programmes - which often makes the total cost competitive.
Australia: three-year bachelor's, one to two-year master's. Comparable tuition; living costs vary by city.
Canada: four-year bachelor's, one to two-year master's. Often the lowest tuition of the four.
US: four-year bachelor's, two-year master's. Generally the highest total cost, with the largest scholarship and assistantship availability, especially at postgraduate level.
Post-study work
This is usually the deciding factor.
UK: the Graduate Route allows eligible graduates to work without a sponsor for a set period.
Canada: post-graduation work permits, with length linked to the programme; historically the most settlement-friendly of the four, though rules have tightened.
Australia: post-study work rights linked to qualification level and location.
US: OPT, with an extension for eligible STEM fields, followed by a route that has historically depended on a capped lottery for many applicants.
Settlement
Canada and Australia use points-based systems that are relatively predictable for skilled graduates. The UK requires a qualifying period on eligible routes and generally means securing sponsorship. The US route is the least predictable for many applicants.
Other factors
- Time zone and distance from India - the UK is closest of the four.
- Recognition on return - all four are well regarded; check profession-specific requirements.
- Community and climate - not trivial over three or four years.
How to choose
- Is settlement the goal, or international experience? That single answer narrows it to two.
- What can you actually fund without unsustainable debt?
- Where does your field hire and sponsor?
- Read each country's current official rules yourself.
