Two different questions hide inside this one: which jobs are in demand, and which of those will take an international graduate. You need both answers.
Where UK demand has been consistently strong
Health and social care. The largest sustained area of shortage, across clinical and support roles.
Engineering. Civil, structural, electrical, mechanical and process, driven by long-running infrastructure work.
Technology and data. Software, data engineering, cyber security and cloud - though demand is uneven by seniority and stack.
Teaching, particularly in shortage subjects such as maths, physics and computing.
Skilled trades and construction management, which are frequently overlooked by graduates.
Accountancy, audit and financial services, where structured graduate intakes remain sizeable.
How to check for yourself, properly
- Read the government's current shortage and immigration salary lists on gov.uk.
- Look at the register of licensed sponsors and see who in your target sector holds a licence.
- Count how many live adverts for your role mention sponsorship. Twenty adverts is a good enough sample.
The interaction that decides your outcome
A field can be in demand and closed to you, if the employers in it do not sponsor. Conversely, a field with modest demand can be very open if its employers sponsor routinely - academia is a good example. Always check demand and sponsorship together.
What to do with the answer
If your field is on both lists, target it directly. If it is in demand but rarely sponsors, use the Graduate Route period after study to enter it as a local candidate. If it is neither, consider an adjacent specialism - a small pivot at the start of a career is much cheaper than a large one later.
The qualification piece
Demand is about skills; access is about credentials and right to work. A UK-recognised qualification helps with the second, which is why so many applicants start with a Level 3 or foundation route into a UK degree.
