Your supervisor is teaching you when your judgement improves, not merely when your task list grows. In a strong digital marketing agency internship, you should receive context before the work, specific feedback after it and gradually more ownership as you demonstrate competence.
Five signs of real supervision
Look for a repeating learning loop:
- The brief includes a purpose. You know the customer, objective, audience and constraint, not just the file that needs updating.
- Someone models the standard. You see an example, walkthrough or explanation before being judged on an unfamiliar task.
- Feedback is specific. "Make it better" is not coaching; "the headline does not match the searcher's intent" is.
- You can ask why. A good supervisor explains decisions without treating questions as resistance.
- Responsibility expands. Once you can complete part of a process, you are trusted with a larger part.
Independence is still part of learning. A supervisor does not need to sit beside you all day, and being asked to attempt a solution before receiving help is healthy. The test is whether support is available at agreed points and whether mistakes become lessons rather than surprises.
Warning signs that you are only extra labour
Be cautious when every task is repetitive, no one reviews your work, priorities change without explanation or the organisation refuses to name a supervisor. An internship can include administration, but administration should not consume the whole learning experience.
After two weeks, ask yourself: can I explain the business reason for my work, name one improvement based on feedback and identify a task I can now do more independently? Three "no" answers justify a conversation.
How to ask for better support
Use a practical request rather than an accusation: "Could we schedule 20 minutes each Friday to review one piece of work? I want to understand what good looks like and apply the feedback the following week." Bring the work and two questions. This makes the meeting easy to grant and useful to both sides.
If nothing changes, document what was agreed and speak to the placement coordinator or course provider. A reputable programme should define supervision before placing learners; this is one of the checks in our guide to choosing a good digital marketing course.
Good supervision is visible in your growing judgement. Digital Marketing in Practice pairs practical teaching with a guaranteed placement so workplace experience extends the learning rather than replacing it.
