Is Digital Marketing an IT Job?

Digital marketing uses technology constantly but is not an IT job - here is where it actually sits, and what that means for your career choice.

A digital marketer working with campaign tools at a computer

No - digital marketing is not an IT job. It is a business and marketing function that happens to run on digital tools. Digital marketers use technology all day (ad platforms, analytics, content systems), but their job is commercial: attracting customers, generating leads and growing revenue. IT roles build and maintain technology itself; marketing roles use technology to reach people. The confusion is understandable, and worth clearing up properly if you are choosing a career.

Why people mix the two up

Digital marketing lives in software, produces dashboards, and sits near websites - all things that look like IT from the outside. In many companies the marketing team even shares projects with IT (site launches, tracking, CRM integrations). But the defining skill set is different: persuasion, customer understanding, writing, campaign economics - applied through tools, not building them.

What digital marketing actually requires

  • No coding. A little HTML awareness helps occasionally; none is required. If you can use everyday office software confidently, you can operate marketing platforms.
  • Communication and creativity. Writing headlines, ads and emails is daily work.
  • Comfort with numbers. Reading analytics and budgets - spreadsheet level, not computer science (the full skills list).
  • Curiosity about people. Why customers choose, hesitate and buy.

Where digital marketing sits in an organisation

Almost always inside the marketing or growth team, reporting toward a marketing director or CMO - not the CTO. Job families, pay scales and career ladders are marketing ones: executive → specialist → marketing manager → head of marketing.

Which should you choose - IT or digital marketing?

Choose IT if building systems, infrastructure and code is what energises you. Choose digital marketing if you want a blend of creative and analytical work with visible commercial results - it is also faster to enter, with no degree required and typical entry within three to nine months. Pay in both fields is strong; senior marketing salaries are covered in how much digital marketing managers make.

A tech-comfortable, non-technical career
