Digital Marketing Course Costs: What Should the Fee Include?

How much a digital marketing course costs depends on format, support and whether an internship is included. Compare like for like with this fee checklist and total-cost calculation.

Someone budgeting course fees on a laptop

A digital marketing course can cost nothing or several thousand pounds, so the headline fee tells you little on its own. The useful comparison is what each fee includes: live teaching or recorded video, tutor feedback on your work, a practical project in each module, and whether work experience is part of the programme. Compare courses of the same format, then add up the total cost of studying, not just the fee.

Compare like-for-like course formats

Most courses fall into one of four formats. Compare within a format before comparing across them.

Format What you usually get What you usually do not get
Free platform courses and certificates Definitions, platform basics, a completion badge Feedback on your own work, live teaching, work experience
Paid video courses Structured videos, quizzes, sometimes templates Tutor marking, live classes, internships
Live online or classroom courses Scheduled classes, tutor feedback, assessed assignments Work experience, unless stated
Courses with an internship Teaching plus a defined period of supervised work Check the terms: length, hours, payment

Free courses from the major ad and analytics platforms are worth doing whatever else you choose. They are not a substitute for feedback or experience, which is what most paid fees are for.

Identify internship and software inclusions

Two items change the value of a fee more than anything else.

Work experience. A course that includes a guaranteed, supervised internship is doing something a video course cannot. Ask how long it is, how many hours a week, who supervises it, and whether it is paid. Our guide to paid and unpaid internships lists the questions.

Software and tools. Most core tools (Google Analytics, Search Console, the ad platforms, WordPress, Canva's free tier) cost nothing to learn on. Check whether any paid tools, hosting or ad budgets for live projects are expected from you.

A transparent fee checklist

Ask every provider these questions and write the answers down:

  1. What is the fee for my study route (online or campus)?
  2. Is teaching live or recorded, and how many hours?
  3. Is every module assessed with a practical assignment?
  4. Is an internship included, guaranteed, and on what terms?
  5. Are there extra costs: exam fees, resits, tools, hosting, certificates?
  6. What are the payment options, and what is the refund policy?
  7. In which currency is the fee charged?

Calculate the total study cost

Add these together for each option:

  • Course fee for your route
  • Extras from the checklist above
  • Travel and living costs if you attend a campus or an on-site internship
  • Time cost: weeks between finishing the course and getting work experience, if the course does not include it

A lower fee that leaves you searching for an internship for months can cost more overall than a higher fee that includes one.

Compare formats before prices, find out exactly what the internship and extras include, and add up the total cost. The right course is the one whose fee buys the feedback and experience you actually need.
