"AI for healthcare" feels more relevant than "AI for leaders". Sometimes it is. Often it is the same course with different case studies and a higher price.
What is genuinely industry-specific
Only three things really are:
- Regulation - clinical safety, financial services conduct rules, legal privilege, education safeguarding.
- Data characteristics - what your sector's data looks like, who owns it, what you may do with it.
- Sector-specific use cases and their failure modes.
Everything else - use-case selection, business cases, governance frameworks, adoption, vendor evaluation - is identical whether you are in logistics or law.
The rough split
About 80% of a leadership AI course is sector-neutral. So you are choosing whether the remaining fifth justifies the premium and the narrower cohort.
Take the industry course when
- You work in a heavily regulated sector where the compliance layer is the difficulty.
- You need peers facing identical constraints.
- Your regulator or professional body expects sector-specific evidence of competence.
Take the general course when
- Your constraints are ordinary commercial ones.
- You want a mixed cohort - cross-sector peers are frequently where the useful ideas come from.
- You want breadth, because the good ideas in your sector usually arrived from another one first.
The hybrid that usually wins
A strong general leadership course, with your own sector used as the worked example throughout. Applied courses let you do exactly that - Leading AI Innovation & Organisational Transformation and Strategic Application of AI in Business are structured around your own organisation's use cases, so the sector context comes from you.
How to check before you pay
Ask for the syllabus and count how many modules are genuinely sector-specific. If it is one out of eight, you are paying for the label.
The bottom line
Go industry-specific when regulation or data is your main constraint. Otherwise take the stronger general course and bring your own sector to it. Related: which industries benefit most from AI.
