How Do I Find UK Companies That Actually Hire From India?

A step-by-step method for building a shortlist of UK employers who genuinely sponsor overseas candidates.

Job seeker researching employers on a laptop

Most job-search time from India is wasted on employers who were never able to hire you. This is the method that fixes that - it takes an afternoon and changes your response rate permanently.

Step 1: Start with the register, not the job board

The Home Office publishes a register of licensed sponsors on gov.uk - every organisation permitted to sponsor workers, searchable and downloadable. Filter it by your sector and by the routes you would use. This is your universe of possible employers. Everyone outside it is a dead end regardless of how well you write.

Step 2: Cross-reference with live vacancies

Take your filtered list and check which of those employers are currently advertising roles you can do. Company careers pages are more reliable than aggregators, which often carry stale listings.

Step 3: Read the advert's right-to-work language

UK adverts frequently say either "we are able to offer sponsorship for this role" or "applicants must have the existing right to work in the UK". Believe both. Applying against an explicit statement is not persistence, it is wasted effort.

Step 4: Look for the structural signals

Employers who sponsor regularly tend to share features:

  • Multinational, with existing offices in India or elsewhere overseas.
  • Large enough to have a dedicated immigration or mobility function.
  • Operating in shortage areas - health, engineering, IT, academia.
  • Publicly listed job families with global grading structures.

Step 5: Use people, not portals

A referral is worth more than fifty applications. Find people doing your target role at your shortlisted employers, and approach them properly: a short, specific message about their work and a clear question, not a request to "refer me for any role".

Step 6: Track it like a pipeline

Keep a simple sheet: employer, sponsor licence confirmed, roles advertised, contact made, application date, outcome. Twenty well-chosen applications tracked properly beat two hundred untracked ones.

When the shortlist comes back empty

That is information, not failure. If almost nobody in your field sponsors at your level, the study route is the realistic alternative - see should I study in the UK or get a job there directly.
