AI Strategy

How Do I Know If My Company Needs an AI Strategy?

Not every business needs a big AI programme - but every business needs a position on AI. Here is how to tell what yours should be.

A leadership team deciding whether their company needs an AI strategy

Every company needs a position on AI, even if that position is "not yet." A strategy simply means you have decided - deliberately, not by drift - where AI fits, what you will trial, and what you will leave alone. The warning sign is not being behind; it is having no view at all while competitors, staff and customers form theirs.

Signs you need one now

  • Staff are already using AI tools informally, with no policy or oversight
  • Competitors are visibly using AI in their product, service or marketing
  • You have repetitive, language- or data-heavy work that eats time
  • Customers are starting to expect faster, more personalised service
  • Leadership keeps being asked "what's our AI plan?" with no answer

Signs a light-touch approach is fine

If your operations are simple, your margins are healthy without automation, and no competitor is gaining ground through AI, you may only need a watching brief and a basic usage policy - not a full programme. The mistake is assuming that means do nothing; even a watching brief is a decision you should review as things change.

A five-minute test

  1. Could AI save us meaningful time on anything we do weekly?
  2. Could a competitor beat us on speed, cost or personalisation using it?
  3. Are staff already using it without guardrails?
  4. Would we know how to evaluate an AI tool if offered one?

Two or more "yes" answers means it is time for a real strategy, not just curiosity.

The bottom line

The question is rarely "do we need AI?" and almost always "how much, where, and how fast?" Answering that deliberately is the heart of the Strategic Application of AI in Business course at London School of Business UK. Enquire today.
