Sometimes yes, often no - it depends entirely on what you get back. An unpaid internship is only worth your time if the experience, mentoring and outcomes it buys are worth more than the wages you forgo. Here is how to judge, and a better option than gambling on it.
When unpaid can be worth it
- You gain real, supervised experience and a portfolio.
- There is genuine mentoring and skill development.
- It is time-limited and leads somewhere (a reference, a role, a network).
- You can afford the period without financial stress.
In these cases the "pay" is the experience that clears the entry-level barrier.
When it is not worth it - or is exploitation
- You do unsupervised grunt work with no learning.
- It drags on indefinitely with no path to a paid role.
- The value flows entirely to the employer. These are red flags.
Free labour dressed up as "experience" is not an investment.
The better alternative
You do not have to choose between an unpaid gamble and no experience at all. A structured digital marketing course with internship gives you a managed, purposeful placement built to develop you - digital marketing with training and internship designed around your learning, not an employer's free work.
A quick test
Ask: in three months, will I have skills, a portfolio and a reference I can point to? If yes, it may be worth it. If it is just hours donated, walk away.
