How to Handle the Time Zone Difference When Interviewing for UK Jobs

Practical handling of IST-to-UK scheduling so the logistics never cost you an interview.

The UK runs four and a half hours behind India in winter (GMT) and four and a half behind in summer too - but the UK switches to British Summer Time in late March and back in late October, so the offset changes twice a year. That switch is where most scheduling errors happen.

Get the mechanics right

  • Always confirm in both zones, in writing. "Thursday 14:00 BST / 18:30 IST" removes all ambiguity.
  • Say which UK zone applies. GMT in winter, BST in summer. Writing "UK time" during a changeover week is how people miss interviews.
  • Send a calendar invitation with the time zone attached, and accept theirs rather than transcribing it manually.
  • Set two alarms, one an hour before.

Offer times that work for both sides

UK business hours of 09:00-17:00 map to roughly 13:30-21:30 IST. Late afternoon UK time is comfortable at both ends. Offering "any time that suits you" sounds accommodating but creates work for the recruiter; give three specific slots instead.

Do not pretend you are somewhere you are not

Being in India is not a disadvantage to hide. Trying to conceal it creates awkwardness the moment a scheduling conflict appears, and honesty about your location pairs naturally with clarity about your notice period and start date.

Protect the call quality

  • Test connection, camera and microphone an hour before.
  • Have a mobile hotspot ready as a backup.
  • Give the interviewer a phone number in advance in case the video fails - this alone has saved many interviews.
  • Account for latency: pause briefly before answering so you do not talk over them.

If the role will involve ongoing overlap

Many UK employers hiring from India ask how you would handle collaboration across time zones. Have an answer: your realistic overlap window, how you would handle asynchronous handovers, and what you would want agreed in advance. It turns a logistical question into evidence of judgement.
