What the Graduate Route allows in terms of job mobility, and how that changes once you move to a sponsored visa.

On the Graduate Route, yes - job mobility is one of its main advantages. On a sponsored route afterwards, no - and the difference between the two is worth planning around before you make a move.

What the Graduate Route allows

Because the Graduate Route is not tied to a sponsor, you can generally:

  • Work for any employer, in any role, at any skill level.
  • Change jobs without notifying the Home Office.
  • Be self-employed or work multiple jobs, subject to the conditions on your visa.
  • Take a role that would never qualify for sponsorship on its own.

Check the conditions stated on your own visa, but this freedom is the reason the route exists - and the reason it is the most useful period of your time in the UK.

What changes on a sponsored route

Once you switch to Skilled Worker sponsorship, your visa is tied to a specific employer and role. Changing employer generally requires a new Certificate of Sponsorship and a new visa application. Significant changes in role or salary may also require action. Leaving your job affects your permission to stay, with a limited period allowed to find a new sponsor.

That is a meaningful loss of bargaining power - and it is worth understanding before you accept the first sponsored offer that appears.

How to use the freedom well

  1. Do not spend the whole Graduate Route in a job that will never sponsor you. Retail or hospitality work is fine while you search; it should not be the plan.
  2. Move deliberately. Two well-chosen roles in the period build a better case than five random ones.
  3. Target sponsoring employers from the start - check the Home Office register.
  4. Get the sponsorship conversation on the table early with any employer you join. "Would you sponsor for this role after my Graduate Route ends?" is a fair question at interview.

The trap to avoid

Accepting a sponsored role you dislike purely for the visa, then being tied to it. Sometimes that trade is worth it - but make it knowingly.
