How to Get Started With AI When Your Company Has Zero AI Experience

Starting from zero is common and fine. Here is a simple 30-60-90 day plan for organisations with no AI experience: rules first, one trained leader, one small win, then build from there.

If your company has no AI experience, you are in good company, and you are not as far behind as headlines suggest. Starting from zero is actually simpler than untangling a messy, uncontrolled rollout. The path is straightforward: agree basic rules, train one leader properly, achieve one small measurable win, then build from there. Here is a 90-day plan.

Days 1 to 30: Foundations

Find out what is already happening

Ask, without judgement, whether people are already using AI tools informally. Many are. Knowing this tells you where enthusiasm lies and what risks exist.

Agree three basic rules

  1. Which AI tools are approved for work.
  2. What information must never be entered into AI tools.
  3. That a person checks AI output before it is used.

Write these on one page and share them.

Appoint an owner

One person, ideally a manager who is curious about AI, becomes responsible for getting started.

Train that person properly

Before rolling anything out, the owner needs hands-on experience: using AI on their own tasks, learning what works and what does not, and understanding how to roll it out safely.

Days 31 to 60: First small win

Pick one task

Choose a frequent, tedious, low-risk task in one team, such as meeting notes, first drafts of standard documents or summarising reports.

Measure today's version

How long does it take? How often does it happen?

Train the small group involved

Short, practical sessions on that specific task.

Run it

Let the team use AI for that task for a few weeks, with the owner supporting.

Days 61 to 90: Learn and decide

Measure again

Compare time and quality with the baseline.

Capture what worked

Write down the new workflow and the prompts that worked best.

Share the result

A short, honest summary to leadership and the wider team.

Decide the next step

Expand to another team or task, refine the approach, or try something different.

What not to do at the start

  • Do not buy enterprise licences for everyone.
  • Do not hire consultants to write a large strategy.
  • Do not try to transform everything at once.
  • Do not wait until you feel "ready".

You will learn faster than you expect

Organisations starting from zero often find that within a few months they have a handful of people using AI confidently, a couple of improved workflows and a much clearer view of where AI can help. Our Leading AI Innovation & Organisational Transformation course is designed for exactly this starting point. It assumes no technical knowledge and takes you from first prompts to a tested team workflow and a 90-day plan.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need to hire someone with AI experience to start?

Usually not. Training an existing manager is faster, cheaper and builds on their knowledge of your business.

Which AI tool should a beginner company use?

Start with one mainstream business assistant, or the AI features in software you already use. The specific tool matters less than training and rules.

How do we know if we are doing it safely?

If you have approved tools, clear data rules and human review of output, you have covered the most important safeguards for getting started.
