The gross numbers make the comparison look obvious. The numbers after tax, rent and currency conversion make it a genuine decision. Here is how to compare properly, without either side of the internet selling you a story.
Start with net, not gross
A UK gross salary is reduced by income tax and National Insurance, and often by pension contributions and the visa-related costs you carry personally. An Indian gross salary is reduced by income tax and provident fund. Comparing gross-to-gross overstates the UK advantage substantially. Always model take-home pay.
Then subtract the cost of living
Rent is the line that decides it. Housing in London and the South East absorbs a large share of a mid-level engineer's take-home pay - far more, proportionally, than in most Indian cities. Add council tax, utilities, transport and the immigration health surcharge, and the effective gap narrows again.
Then look at what you cannot see on a payslip
- Currency direction. If you plan to send money to India or return later, the exchange rate is part of your compensation.
- Equity and bonuses. More common in some markets than others; they can change the comparison entirely.
- Career ceiling. Access to certain products, markets and seniority tracks differs by location.
- Time cost. Visa dependency, notice periods and job-change friction have real financial value.
A fair way to run the comparison
Build two twelve-month budgets side by side: net income, rent, utilities, transport, food, insurance, savings, and money sent home. Do it with real rental listings in the specific city you would live in, not national averages. Most people find the UK still comes out ahead in absolute savings, but by a smaller margin than the headline suggests - and the margin depends heavily on the city.
Do not plan around any single figure
Salary benchmarks age fast and vary by city, sector and stack. Use current UK sources - published salary surveys, live job adverts stating ranges, and official statistics - rather than a number quoted in a forum thread two years ago.
The wider question
Money is one input. See is it worth leaving a stable job in India for uncertain UK prospects and are UK salaries really worth the visa process for the rest of the decision.
