Part-time work during a UK course serves two purposes: money and CV. The best jobs do both. The worst do neither well and eat the hours you needed for coursework.
First, the rules
Your Student visa states how many hours you may work during term time, with different provisions for vacation periods. Self-employment and freelance work are typically prohibited. The best options
On-campus roles. Student ambassador, open-day guide, library assistant, lab demonstrator, peer mentor, student union work. They are built around teaching timetables, they employ students routinely, and they look good on a UK CV.
Customer-facing retail and hospitality. Not glamorous, but they build workplace English, UK references and confidence faster than almost anything else - and UK employers read that experience as evidence of reliability, not as a step down.
Tutoring and academic support, where your institution runs a scheme. Well paid relative to the hours and directly relevant if you are heading toward teaching or training.
Sector-adjacent junior work - a marketing assistant day a week, a data entry role in a firm in your field. Harder to find, but by far the most valuable for your first graduate application.
Research assistance for academics in your department, if it is offered as paid work.
What to avoid
- Anything paid in cash without a contract or payslip.
- Roles requiring self-employment status.
- Work that pushes you over your permitted hours "just this once".
- Jobs so demanding that your grades slip - your degree is the asset you came for.
The strategic use of your hours
Aim for the same employer over a longer period rather than several short jobs. Continuity produces a reference, and a UK reference is worth more in your first job search than the wages were.
