There is no universally "best" channel - there is only the best channel for your audience, offer and horizon. But the core options are stable, and each has a distinct job. Here is the honest comparison, and a way to choose.
The core channels and what each is for
- Search engine optimisation (SEO). Compounding visibility for people actively looking for what you sell. Slow to start (6-12 months), cheap to sustain, and the foundation of durable inbound demand.
- Paid search (Google Ads). The same high-intent audience, instantly - you pay per click forever. Unbeatable for testing offers fast and for capturing demand you don't yet rank for.
- Paid social (Meta, TikTok, LinkedIn). Creates demand rather than capturing it, with precise targeting. Powerful for consumer products and B2B awareness; creative quality is the main performance driver.
- Email marketing. The highest-ROI channel in study after study - because you own the list and pay nothing for reach. Does the nurturing and retention work other channels can't.
- Content marketing. Articles, video and resources that earn trust and feed every other channel (SEO rankings, social material, email substance). A multiplier more than a standalone channel.
- Organic social. Community, proof and brand presence. Limited reach for business pages - best treated as a trust layer and a testing ground for paid, run on sound practices.
How to choose yours
Answer three questions:
- Does your audience already search for this? High search demand → SEO + paid search first. Little search demand (new categories, impulse products) → paid social and content create it.
- What is your timeframe and budget? Need results this quarter → paid channels. Building for next year → SEO, content and email compound. Most healthy strategies pair one fast channel with one compounding one.
- What can you sustain excellently? A channel you can't feed consistently will underperform a "worse" channel run well - the focus argument made in avoiding common marketing mistakes.
Then measure relentlessly and let results reallocate the budget (tracking performance and ROI). Whatever you choose, email plus one acquisition channel is the minimum viable stack for almost any business.
