Lower the total cost of a cost per click campaign by removing irrelevant demand and improving the rate at which useful clicks become customers. Across-the-board bid cuts make the dashboard cheaper but can remove the best leads along with the waste.
Audit search terms first
Review what people actually typed, not only the keywords you selected. Separate relevant commercial intent, relevant research intent and irrelevant traffic. Add clear exclusions as negative keywords, tighten themes and send different intentions to appropriate ads or pages.
Do not add negatives from one disappointing click. Look for patterns and protect valuable variants, especially when data volume is low.
Improve message match
Align keyword, ad and landing page around the same need. Specific ads can reduce curiosity clicks and improve the user's experience. Include price, location, eligibility or other genuine qualifiers when they help unsuitable prospects opt out before clicking.
Google's Quality Score best-practice guide describes the score as a diagnostic rather than a KPI. Use expected click-through rate, ad relevance and landing-page experience to locate weaknesses, not to chase a perfect number.
Raise conversion and qualification
Speed up the page, make the next step clear and remove unnecessary form fields. Then protect lead quality: explain the offer honestly and capture the information sales needs to prioritise follow-up. A lower cost per raw lead can be worse if the leads do not fit.
Feed qualified-lead or customer outcomes back into reporting where possible. Our guide to lead quality versus click volume explains why this changes optimisation behaviour.
Control the account structure
Pause duplicate or obsolete campaigns, confirm location settings, check network performance and stop sending traffic to broken or irrelevant pages. Set budgets around priority rather than letting legacy campaigns consume what is available.
Change bids with a hypothesis
After fixing obvious waste, adjust bids or automated targets based on profitability and volume. Record the date, reason and expected effect. Allow enough time for a meaningful comparison, while retaining clear safety limits for spend or tracking failure.
The goal is not the lowest CPC. It is the lowest sustainable cost for the qualified business you want. Digital Marketing in Practice teaches campaign structure, landing pages and analytics as one connected system.
