LinkedIn Ads cost per click is often higher than broad consumer social traffic because advertisers compete for precise professional audiences. Google Search may also be expensive where purchase intent is strong. The useful comparison is cost per qualified opportunity and pipeline value, not which platform produces the cheaper click.
What LinkedIn buys
LinkedIn can target professional context such as role, seniority, company or industry, subject to the platform's current options. That is valuable for B2B offers where only a small group can influence the decision. LinkedIn's official pricing page explains that ads are sold through an auction and that the campaign objective determines the billable event.
The audience may fit professionally but not yet have active demand. Creative and content often need to educate, build credibility or create a reason to engage.
What Google Search buys
Search reaches people expressing a need in the moment. It can capture high intent but may not distinguish a decision-maker from a student, competitor or job seeker without careful queries and qualification. In narrow B2B categories, search volume can also be limited.
Build a fair comparison
Use the same market, offer and qualification definition. Track:
- Valid clicks or landing-page visits
- Qualified leads and target-account fit
- Opportunities and expected pipeline value
- Sales cycle and assisted influence
- Creative, management and sales-handling cost
A £20 click that reaches the right buying committee can be more valuable than a £5 click from a generic search. The reverse is also possible when professional targeting looks precise but the offer creates no urgency.
Use the platforms together
LinkedIn can introduce expertise to a target account, while Search captures later problem-aware demand. Consistent campaign naming and CRM source data help show that the same opportunity touched both. Do not force last-click reporting to erase the earlier role.
Choose from the constraint
If the market has clear search demand, test Search first. If search volume is low but the buying audience is identifiable, test LinkedIn with strong content and realistic conversion expectations. Scale only after qualified pipeline supports the economics.
