Your Student visa does not end on your final exam day - it usually runs for a short period beyond your course end date. What you do with that window, and whether you apply for the Graduate Route inside it, determines everything that follows.
The three periods to know
- Your Student visa wind-down. A limited period after your course ends, stated on your visa.
- The Graduate Route. If you completed an eligible course at an eligible institution, you can apply to stay and work without a sponsor for a period set by the Home Office. You must apply from inside the UK and before your Student visa expires.
- A sponsored route afterwards, if you have secured a qualifying job.
The Graduate Route's length and eligibility conditions have been reviewed and adjusted before. Check gov.uk for the current position rather than relying on what a previous cohort experienced.
The mistake that ends people's plans
Leaving the country before applying, or letting the Student visa lapse. The application has to be made in time and in the UK. Diarise it the moment you enrol - not in your final term.
What to do with the Graduate Route period
Treat it as a runway with a hard end date, not a holiday.
- Start applying before you graduate. UK graduate schemes recruit up to a year ahead.
- Take relevant work early, even if it is not your target role. UK experience and references compound.
- Identify sponsoring employers from the start - your goal is to convert to a sponsored route before the runway ends.
- Keep records of employment and absences; they matter for any later settlement application.
If you do not convert in time
Options include a further eligible course, switching to another route you qualify for, or leaving and applying from overseas later with UK experience behind you.
