Two different things hide inside this question. One is formal expiry - does the certificate have an end date? The other is relevance decay - does the knowledge go stale? They have different answers, and the second matters more.
Formal expiry: sometimes yes
Some certifications, especially vendor ones tied to a specific platform version, carry an official expiry (often two to three years) and require renewal or re-certification to stay "active". Others - many university and foundational certificates - do not expire at all; once earned, they are yours. Check the specific programme; do not assume either way.
Relevance decay: always a risk
Here is the part people miss: even a certificate that never formally expires can become outdated in substance. AI moves fast. A certificate from a few years ago may reference tools and practices that have moved on. Employers know this, so a five-year-old AI certificate with no recent activity is a weaker signal than a current one backed by recent work.
Do you actually need to renew?
- Vendor certificate with an expiry → renew if you still work in that stack; let it lapse if you have moved on
- Non-expiring certificate → no formal renewal, but keep the skills current
- Either way → the real "renewal" is staying active: new projects, new tools, ongoing learning
Renewing a badge you no longer use is rarely worth it. Keeping your actual capability current always is.
Keep the credential alive
The best defence against a stale certificate is a living body of work. Keep applying AI, keep a short log of recent projects, and top up your knowledge as the field shifts. That way your effective credential is always current, whatever the date on the certificate says. A structured refresh like Understanding AI: What Leaders Need to Know can bring an older foundation back up to date.
The bottom line
Some AI certificates formally expire and some do not - but all of them can go stale as the field moves. Renew a vendor badge only if you still use that stack, and in every case keep your real skills current with ongoing work. That is the renewal that counts.
