Yes. Indian degrees are recognised in the UK - the question is not whether they count, but whether the person reading your CV knows how much they count. That is a communication problem, and it is solvable.
How equivalence actually works
The UK has a national agency (UK ENIC) that assesses overseas qualifications against UK levels. A three or four-year Indian bachelor's degree is typically comparable to a UK bachelor's, though the precise comparison depends on the institution, the length and the programme. Where an employer, university or regulator needs certainty, they will ask for a formal statement of comparability.
For most jobs, nobody requests one. The recruiter simply forms an impression in a few seconds - which is why stating the equivalence yourself matters.
What to put on your CV
- The qualification name, the institution, and the years.
- One clause of context if the institution is not internationally known.
- The UK equivalent grade. A percentage or CGPA means little to a UK reader; "equivalent to a UK 2:1" means a lot. See what's the difference between a 2:1 UK degree and an Indian GPA.
Where a degree alone is not enough
- Regulated professions - medicine, law, teaching, accountancy at certain levels, chartered engineering - require registration with a professional body, not just a degree.
- Right to work. No degree grants it. If the employer does not sponsor, the degree is irrelevant to that application.
- Roles requiring UK-specific knowledge - UK tax, UK law, UK regulatory frameworks - where the gap is content, not credibility.
What actually gets you hired
For anyone two or more years into their career, experience and evidence outweigh the degree entirely. For recent graduates, the degree matters more - and so does everything around it: internships, projects, portfolio, and the ability to write a UK-format application.
If your degree keeps being questioned
Two fixes work. Get a formal statement of comparability, or add a UK-recognised qualification that removes the question. The second also helps if you are changing field.
