How Do I Apply for a UK Student Visa From India?

The Student visa process from India in order - CAS, funds, documents, biometrics and the mistakes that cause refusals.

Student visa application documents and passport

The UK Student visa process is document-driven. Most refusals come from paperwork problems, not from judgement calls - which means most refusals are preventable.

The sequence

  1. Get an unconditional offer from a licensed student sponsor (your university or college).
  2. Receive your CAS - the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. You cannot apply without it.
  3. Hold your maintenance funds for the required period before applying. The amount and the holding period are specified by the Home Office and the funds must be evidenced correctly.
  4. Prepare documents - passport, CAS, qualifications listed on the CAS, English test result, financial evidence, TB test certificate where required, and parental consent documents if applicable.
  5. Complete the online application on gov.uk and pay the fee and Immigration Health Surcharge.
  6. Book and attend biometrics at a visa application centre.
  7. Await the decision, or use a priority service if one is available for your application.

Where applications go wrong

  • Financial evidence. Wrong account holder, funds held for too short a period, statements that do not show the required details, or a balance that dips below the threshold during the qualifying period. This is the single most common problem.
  • Name and document mismatches between passport, certificates and application.
  • Missing translations or uncertified ones.
  • Applying too early or too late relative to your course start date.
  • A weak credibility interview. Some applicants are interviewed. Know your course, your modules, why that university, how you are funding it, and your plans afterwards. Vague answers cause refusals.

Practical advice

Read the current Student visa guidance on gov.uk in full before you start - it is the authoritative source and it is updated. Your university's international office will also check documents for you, and they do this all day. Use them.

If your qualifications do not yet meet entry

Get the entry qualification sorted before the visa process - a recognised Level 3 or foundation route puts you at UK degree-entry standard. See how do I get into a UK university as an Indian student.
