Ask what an AI leadership course costs and you get answers from "nothing" to "£40,000". Both are true, because the label covers four very different products. Here is what each band buys.
The four price bands
- Free - self-paced literacy courses from cloud vendors and universities. Good for vocabulary, no credential, no feedback.
- £300 to £900 - short taught executive courses, usually four to eight weeks, blended or live online, with a certificate. This is where most leaders land.
- £2,000 to £6,000 - longer cohort programmes with workshops, projects and cohort peers.
- £15,000+ - business school executive education and AI-focused MBA modules, priced largely on the brand and the network.
For reference, Leading AI Innovation & Organisational Transformation is £720 for six weeks blended, and AI Strategy for Executives is £492.
What actually moves the price
Three things, and none of them is the AI content: live teaching time, assessed work with feedback, and brand. Two courses can teach the same material and differ tenfold on brand alone. So the useful question is not "is this expensive" but "am I paying for teaching or for a logo".
The costs people forget
Your time is the bigger number. Six weeks at four hours a week is roughly 24 hours of senior time, which for most managers exceeds the fee. Budget it deliberately rather than discovering it in week three. We break the wider figures down in how much it costs to learn AI.
How to decide your number
Work backwards from the decision you need to make. If you need to sponsor an AI project next quarter, a short taught course pays for itself on one avoided mistake. If you are rebuilding a career, the heavier programme may be justified. Sizing the ROI is covered in what is the ROI on an expensive AI course.
The bottom line
Most working leaders get what they need in the £300 to £900 band. Spend more only when you are buying live teaching, real feedback or a network you will actually use. Related: are free AI courses worth it.
